Compostable and biodegradable cups
This is where most well-intentioned businesses land, and it's genuinely better than plastic-lined paper. It's also the option most oversold.
"Compostable" in this context almost always means industrially compostable - the cup needs sustained high temperatures and controlled conditions to break down. It won't do this in a backyard compost bin, and it won't do it in a landfill, where the absence of oxygen means it behaves roughly like conventional waste.
So the cup only delivers on its promise if three things are true:
1. Your municipality has industrial composting
2. That facility accepts this specific material
3. The cup actually reaches it rather than being cross-contaminated into general waste
In much of Canada, at least one of those fails. The cup is still better than plastic-lined paper - no persistent microplastic film - but the composting claim is conditional in a way the packaging rarely admits.
"Biodegradable" is a weaker claim still. Almost everything biodegrades eventually. The word carries no timeframe and, on its own, means very little.

Edible cups
An edible cup removes the disposal question by removing the disposal. You drink the drink, you eat the cup, and there's no waste stream to manage, no bin, no sorting, no dependence on municipal infrastructure.
